Despite it is the third most abundant element on Earth, after oxygen and silicon, the aluminum is the youngest among the industrial metals, having been produced on an industrial scale only few more that 100 years ago.
Aluminum is a malleable, ductile, lightweight (has a specific weight of about one-third of steel or copper), is not magnetic, resistant to oxidation, due to the formation of a thin layer of oxide that forms quickly when it is exposed to air and that prevents oxygen from corrode metal, also in marine exposures.
The aluminum is extracted primarily from bauxite, is processed through different production processes, such as fusion , forged or molding .
Can be worked easily, it is used in many industries for the manufacture of various products, structural components made of aluminum are very important in the aerospace, transportation, and construction field. The high thermal conductivity makes aluminum very suitable for heating and cooling applications.
Its surface can be treated with a variety of coatings, from painting to colored anodized.
The aluminum alloys are divided into foundry alloys for the manufacture of castings and in plastic deformation alloys for the production of extruded and forged laminates.
According to ISO the classification provides a 4 digit number codification:
- The first digit indicates the alloy family
- The second digit indicates possible changes at the original alloy, normally referred as 0
- The third and fourth digits in the 1xxx series indicate the degree of purity of aluminum, in the other series indicate the various alloys
